Is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as Good as His Father Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.?
Former WBC middleweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., has had an interesting journey in boxing. While he reached the pinnacle of the sport and became a world champion, he never truly became a boxing superstar. And that was solely down to the fact that he was the son of the great Julio Cesar Chavez.
Mexicans are very passionate about boxing, and the fans often idolize the Mexican champions. However, Chavez Jr. never got the same attention as his father. So let’s see if Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was as good as his father Chavez Sr.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. career in comparison to his father
The 35-year-old has a 52-5-1 record, with 34 knockout victories. These are numbers that any boxer should be proud of. However, the former champion never escaped his father’s shadow. Chavez Sr. has an unbelievable record of 107-6-2.
The 58-year-old has over 100 professional fights, with over 100 professional victories and 85 knockouts. Therefore, when you compare the two records, it is no surprise that Chavez Jr. could never escape his father’s shadow.
Moreover, in terms of achievements, Chavez Sr. racked up several world titles across four weight classes, was on the P4P list for most parts of his career, and won many individual accolades. Whereas, Chavez Jr. could only ever win one world title. Therefore, it is clear Chavez Jr. is not as good as his father.
Why couldn’t Chavez Jr. emulate his father?
Thanks to his unbelievable success in the ring, and the length of his career, Chavez Sr. attained god-like status in Mexico. However, his son, although a world champion from 2011 to 2012, was far from this. So why couldn’t he live up to the levels set by his father?
Firstly, the levels set by Chavez Sr. are almost impossible to emulate, and there will probably never be a boxer who can do what he did. However, Chavez Jr. did not do himself any favors either.
Indiscipline and bad decisions prevented the Mexican from showing his worth. Chavez Jr. started his career with an incredible 47-fight unbeaten streak. However, he could never kick on from there. And despite his success, some could still argue that he under-achieved.
What do you make of Chavez Jr.’s career? Do you think he could have emulated his father?
