9 Female Artists You Need To Know Nominated For 2023 BRIT Award
The 2023 Brit Awards are nearly upon us, and while only a few walk away with the coveted sing during the evening, we cannot help but shine a light on all the inspiring talent, especially the female artists.
With the Best Artist category frustratingly being all-male, we want to re-iterate the incredible array of women working hard in the industry and topping the charts. And along with the likes of Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa and Lizzo, this year has seen a whole wave of emerging female artists who have been absolutely killing it on the music scene with their stunning sound and unique artistry.
So, without further ado, let us introduce you to the nine female artists you should know about that are nominated at the 2023 Brit Awards, and you may want to bag a ticket to see them live right now because, soon enough, they'll be selling out stadium tours.
Mimi Webb (Best New Artist)
Mimi Webb used the pandemic as her time to "really smash it out" after TikTok star Charli D'Amelio brought widespread recognition to her music by using it in one of her TikTok videos. Mimi has since appeared on The Ellen Show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon had two singles in the UK Top 15 and is preparing for her upcoming tour. Impressive.
Gayle (Best International Song)
After signing with Atlantic Records/Arthouse Records, American singer and songwriter Gayle released her hit single ABCDEFU, which went viral on TikTok, reaching number one in the UK on the Billboard Global 200 while also earning her a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.
Eliza Rose (Best Dance Act, Song of the Year)
Dalston born and raised Eliza is an incredibly talented DJ and music producer whose tune B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All) reached number one in September 2022 after being heavily played on the UK festival circuit. This was an impressive feat as the last female DJ to top the UK Singles Chart was Sonique in 2000.
Wet Leg (Best Rock/Alternative Act, British Album Of The Year, British Group, Best New Artist)
Wet Leg has bagged the most nominations at the BRITs alongside Harry Styles, and that honour is very well deserved. The British indie rock band from the Isle of Wight, consisting of members Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, debuted with the single Chaise Longue in 2021, with their self-titled debut album debuting the following year at number one on the UK Albums Chart, Australia's ARIA Albums Chart, and the Irish Albums Chart. Impressive. That's not all. They were also shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize and have already won two Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance.
Cat Burns (Song of the Year, Best Pop/R&B Act, Brit Awards Rising Star)
Cat Burns has been shortlisted for the coveted 2023 Brit Awards Rising Star award, and for a good reason. The platinum-selling singer/songwriter from Streatham, South London, attended the BRIT School before releasing her debut EP, Adolescent, in 2016. Her song Go released in 2020, went viral on TikTok and transformed her music career to new heights.
Rina Sawayama (Best New Artist)
Japanese-British singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama entered the music industry in 2017 after self-releasing her debut extended play, Rina. She signed to Dirty Hit in 2020, and her second studio album, Hold the Girl, released to critical acclaim last year. Oh, and she's dipping her toes in the acting world and will be making her big screen debut in John Wick: Chapter 4.
Kim Petras (Song of the Year)
Kim Petras made history as the first openly transgender woman to win a Grammy Award in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for her viral hit tune Unholy alongside Sam Smith.
Nova Twins (Group Of The Year, Best Rock/Alternative Act)
Amy Love and Georgia South of Nova Twins have achieved a lot since they arrived on the rock music scene in 2015 with their debut single, Bassline Bitch, and debut album, Who Are The Girls? Since then, the British duo have toured with the likes of Prophets Of Rage, Bring Me The Horizon, Wolf Alice and Sleaford Mods. Their second album Supernova released in June 2022 to critical acclaim. The pair use issues such as political unrest, women's rights and social media's power to champion rock's resurgence. "There's so much political unrest that's been going around as well with Black Lives Matter, and the #MeToo movement, and a lot of things that people are upset about," Amy explained to HotPress. "That creates the perfect atmosphere for an angrier tone, which is obviously what rock and punk music thrives in."
First Aid Kit - International Group of the Year
Swedish film duo and sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg have released five albums, four EPs and numerous singles, such as Emmylou, which has garnered them critical acclaim. They were previously nominated for International Group of the Year at the BRITs in 2019.
