Hairstyles Through The Ages: From The 1920s To Now.
1930s platinum blonde curls, pinned back in the 50s and the 90s poker straight look: each decade had its very own 'do.
1. 1920s: Short, Sharp Bob.
Dancer and actress Louise Brooks epitomised the 20s look with her razor sharp short bob with straight fringe. The decade's fashion shunned femininity and was all about dresses with a dropped waist and boyish looks for women and it was no exception for hair. Masculine ruled.
2. 1930s: Platinum Curls.
Whilst hair was still on the shorter side, barely long enough to cover the ears, the cut had become softer with lots of waves and curls. Gone was the fringe and the black dye, now it was all about the platinum blonde, as worn by 30s star Jean Harlow.
3. 1940s: Long, Waves And Side Parting.
By the 1940s women's hair had grown and was styled in glamorous waves, with a side parting that always covered an eye. This was the era of film noir, so the more mysterious the better. Actress Veronica Lake truly embodied the beauty idea of the times.
4. 1950s: Shorter, Pinned Back Curls.
By the 1950s the fashion had changed once again and the trendy styles of the time demanded that women cut their hair again, or at least pin it back. Waves and curls were still very popular, but the face was left uncovered, unlike the previous era. As for colour, any shade would do, as long as there was no hair out of place.
5. 1960s: Short and Straight.
The 60s brought a political, musical and sexual revolution and hair followed suit. The boyish look was back: girls wore short hair with long straight fringes or bowl haircuts and had stick-thin frames, just like model Twiggy. Vidal Sassoon was the hairdresser to go to if you lived in London.
6. 1970s: Bouncy Waves And Flicks.
In the 70s women reclaimed their sensuality, wearing their hair long, layered with bouncy waves and a flick. Highlights started making an appearance too for that sun-kissed look.
7. 1980s: Choppy And Feathered.
If you were a teen in the 80s, chances are you are probably still cringing at some of the 'dos of that decade. The layers were taken to another level, with short hair on top, and choppy feathered hair at the sides and back. Let's not forget the two-tonal highlights and the amount of mousse and gel that was required to achieve this look. The 80s were truly the stuff of hairstyling nightmares. And don't get us started on the perm, which became particularly popular from 1986 onward.....
8. 1990s: Long, Poker Straight With A Fringe.
90s hair was so straight it actually looked greasy! Silicon-based serum John Frieda's Frizz Ease was one of the best selling products on the market and often girls put lip gloss in their hair too, to give it that...fried look! This hairy mess was worn long without a layer in sight, and with a fringe.
9. 2000s: Long And Messy.
The noughties were a little loser when it came to hair. There wasn't a must-have haircut as such, but long, slightly messy, just out of bed hair was what women liked to wear.
10. 2010s: Layered And Blonde.
Glossy blow-dries, layers and waves have been big in the last five years. The look has been groomed but not overdone. Classy and sexy. But the real surprise has been the colour. It seems that for a while everybody was blonde. Honey, vanilla, sandy, golden, all the shades have been huge since 2010.
11. 2015: The Midi, Wavy Bob.
The 'do du jour is the midi, wavy bob as worn here by model Jourdan Dunn. It's pretty, feminine, easier to care for than longer hair and every hot actress sports it: Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone and even Beyonce dared to go shorter for a while.
