Derek Jeter had a relentless work ethic and a drive to win. This, coupled with his desire to improve, made him one of the MLB’s cleanest superstars. He led by example through good times and bad. This makes one think that Jeter never cheated and that he played the game clean. Derek Jeter cheated in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays!
During a game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in September 2010, Derek Jeter was caught cheating. While batting late in the game, Jeter claimed that he was hit by a pitch from Rays’ pitcher Jake Qualls. But in reality, the pitch actually hit Jeter’s bat, more specifically the knob of the bat.
The umpire decided in Jeter’s favor on account of his reaction to the incident. Jeter writhed in pain and looked to have been genuinely hurt. He was allowed to walk to first base by the umpire in what seemed to be a logical decision at the time. Jeter had never faked being hit by a ball before and the umpire didn’t think he was doing it at that moment.
But after watching the replay from a different angle, the truth came to light. And it was revealed that the ball hit Jeter’s bat and then rolled off of his thigh. The incident left Tampa Bay fans incensed, and they started shouting “Derek Cheater” from the stands. A play on Jeter’s name in light of his actions. But Tampa Bay got their revenge as they won the game 4-3 in a close and crucial AL East matchup.
Jeter was not punished for the act and since then most people have seemed to have forgotten about it. And fans still remember as Jeter fooled the umpire and got away with it.
