Oscilloscopes Fenkel starts A24 Films

Indie distrib expected to be active at Toronto

David Fenkel, who ankled as president of Oscilloscope Laboratories in the spring, has launched indie distributor A24 Films in New York City.

The company recently opened Manhattan offices. Several producers have told Daily Variety that they expect A24 to be a buyer at the upcoming Toronto Intl. Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 6 to 16.

Fenkel co-founded Oscilloscope in 2008 with Adam Yauch. He announced in early May that he was stepping down as president of the four-year-old shingle and moving into a consulting role, while Dan Berger and David Laub were promoted to cooperatively oversee marketing, distribution and acquisitions — but stayed around longer than expected after Yauch’s unexpected death.

Prior to launching Oscilloscope, Fenkel had been an exec at ThinkFilm, where he first collaborated with Yauch on distributing his film “Awesome I Fuckin’ Shot That!” in 2006. Oscilloscope’s notable releases have included “Meek’s Cutoff,” “Wendy and Lucy,” “Bellflower,” “No Impact Man,” “Shut Up and Play the Hits” and the upcoming “Samsara.”
