Mother's Day dates back to the 1900s and was established by a West Virginia woman called Anna Jarvis. It wasn't made an official holiday until 1914, however, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it as such.

It's now celebrated internationally, though dates and traditions differ depending where in the world you are.

What is Mother's Day?

Mother's Day is an annual holiday celebrating moms and motherhood.

Although there were limited known observances of Mother's Day in the 1800s, it was officially established by Anna Jarvis and observed for the first time in 1908 at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

She created the holiday after her mother, Ann Jarvis, put together a committee to create a holiday called Mother's Friendship Day, to bring families back together after the Civil War.

For Mother's Day I asked my son if he thought a 2018 Red Range Rover Supercharged Sport would fit into his budget. He told me to look in my parking space, and if it's not there, it's been stolen! He's my favorite chocolate chip! #MothersDay

The elder Jarvis wanted to expand her efforts into an annual memorial for mothers, but died in 1905 before she had the chance. Her daughter, Anna, took on the task afterward.

Mother's Day became an official holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks to a proclamation from President Woodrow Wilson.

Mother's Day in the U.K.

Mothering Sunday, the United Kingdom's version of Mother's Day, dates back to the 16th century and is a Catholic and Protestant holiday. When it was first established, people would take the day to visit their 'mother' church.

Later, the day was observed by giving domestic servants the day off to visit their mother church and their families.

Mothering Sunday faded in popularity in the 1920s and was instead replaced by the commercialized American version of the holiday, created by Jarvis years prior.

After she wrote a book calling for the holiday to be revived, the Church of England made the decision to merge British tradition with some American ones in observance of the date.

Mothering Sunday continues to be celebrated in March, while Mother's Day is observed on the second Sunday of May annually.

When is Mother's Day this year?

Mother's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 13, 2018 in the United States, China, Australia and some European countries.

Mother's Day traditions

Mother's Day has traditionally been marked by attending church, giving out carnations to mothers or maternal figures and attending family dinners.

Carnations were delivered by Anna Jarvis, who put together the first Mother's Day celebration, in 1908. The custom has been adopted by churches.

White carnations were used to symbolize a deceased mother while pink signified your mother was still living. The custom began with wearing carnations to church and eventually turned into handing them out.

These traditions have evolved slightly over the years.

Nowadays children often hand-make cards and other crafts for their moms or pick out elaborate bouquets. Some people also observe Mother's Day by taking their moms out for brunch and/or buying them gifts.

According to Fortune, Americans spend an average of $729 million (£523.4m) on Mother's Day cards, $2.4 billion (£1.7b) on flowers, $4.1 billion (£2.9b) on outings and $1.6 billion (£1.1b) on pampering related to Mother's Day annually.
