Why Did Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf Break Up?
Megan Fox doesn’t appear to be in the public eye as much as she once was. But now, it seems her split from Brian Austin Green and newfound romance with Machine Gun Kelly are making headlines. Green and Fox were together for over a decade, and many didn’t expect the split to occur. Even so, it seems they amicably went their separate ways. And we’re excited to see where Fox’s relationship with the younger pop star goes.
Before Machine Gun Kelly, though, we can’t forget there were many rumors surrounding Fox and actor Shia LaBeouf. The two worked on Transformers together in the mid-2000s, and they confirmed they had a romantic relationship. So, why did the romance end? Here’s what we know.
Megan Fox met her ex-husband, Brian Austin Green, back in 2004
Before considering Fox’s relationship with LaBeouf, it’s important to note the timeline of her relationship with Green. According to Entertainment Tonight, Green first met Fox when he guest-starred on an episode of Hope & Faith back in 2004. While they had quite the age difference (Fox was 18 and Green was 30), Fox knew she wanted to pursue relations with him. And their relationship moved quickly after that.
Green and Fox dated for two years before getting engaged. But by 2009, cracks started to show in their relationship. The duo called off their engagement, but by 2010, it was back on. They wed in 2010, and then just five years later, they split once more. Fox filed for divorce in 2015, though the couple didn’t go through with it. Finally, in May 2020 and after a cryptic Instagram post about feeling “smothered” from Green, Fox and Green called it quits (for real this time).
“Neither one of us did anything to each other,” Green noted. “She’s always been honest with me. I’ve always been honest with her.”
Fox later revealed she had a romantic relationship with Shia LaBeouf after she met Green
Green and Fox seemed to be on and off through the entirety of their relationship. And Entertainment Tonight notes Green didn’t even want to date Fox at first due to their serious age difference. Aside from these two, we also know there was another man in the picture at some point for Fox — and that was Shia LaBeouf. LaBeouf and Fox first met in 2007 while on the set of Transformers, and they filmed together again in 2009.
The Huffington Post notes LaBeouf was the first to confirm a romance occurred. “Look, you’re on the set for six months, with someone who’s rooting to be attracted to you, and you’re rooting to be attracted to them,” LaBeouf told Details magazine in 2011. “I never understood the separation of work and life in that situation. But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing.”
Fox also admitted she had deep feelings for LaBeouf. “I mean, I would confirm that it was romantic,” she said on Watch What Happens Live. “I love him. I have never been really quiet about that. I love him.”
Why did LaBeouf and Fox break up?
So, if LaBeouf and Fox were so in love, why didn’t their romance last? The Huffington Post notes the couple never actually went public with the relationship, and it appeared to fizzle once they were off the set of Transformers. Not only that, but Life & Style notes Fox wasn’t the only Transformers co-star LaBeouf had his eye on. He admitted to “philandering around” with Isabel Lucas while they filmed Revenge of the Fallen in 2009.
“It was sort of disastrous … Neither one of us, I think, were in love,” he noted. “Just sort of experimenting or whatever.”
So, was Fox cheating on Green with LaBeouf at any point? We can’t say for sure, but Green and Fox seem to have a mutual respect for each other even now post-split, and Green dispelled any cheating rumors that may have had legs. While Fox is now pursuing her own romance, many think she and LaBeouf should give things another shot.
